From the Pastor
24-25 September 2005
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend is designated as "Welcome Sunday" at Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph. Every summer we have a significant influx of new residents to the Leavenworth area and every year we are fortunate to have new families join our parish. Whether you have just arrived here as members of the Armed Forces, perhaps at the Command and General Staff College, or have come north due to storm damage of Hurricane Katrina, or simply have moved to Leavenworth to work or retire: WELCOME!

We are happy to have you join our parish family and take part in the life of the community, regardless of the time you will be with us. If you have not had a chance to register in the parish you will have that opportunity today. Before and after Mass, representatives of our Parish Council will be in the back of church to answer any of your questions and help you to register with us. We will be honoring all our newcomers with a special blessing and a special memento of our parish at each Mass this weekend. We are glad you are here with us!

This Sunday afternoon, a part of the Leavenworth Pastoral Region's commemoration of the Year of the Eucharist, we will be having Eucharistic Adoration at Sacred Heart in Kickapoo. Adoration will begin at 1:00p.m., and will conclude with a prayer service and Benediction at 5:30p.m. This is a great opportunity to take the family out for a drive in the country and make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament at our stational church of Sacred Heart. If you have never been to Kickapoo, don't hesitate to ask me for directions!

The coming Friday evening at 7:00p.m. at St. Joseph Church, we will be having our annual celebration of the Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus. St. Therese, "the Little Flower" died in the Carmelite Convent of Lisieux, France, on September 30, 1897. As the oldest Carmelite parish in the United States, we look forward to this special Mass for a very special Carmelite saint.

We are happy to announce that we are now offering a Nursery for infants, toddlers, and children through age 3 for parents who attend the 10:30a.m. Mass at Immaculate Conception. We have licensed day care providers available at the Xavier Elementary School Building south of the church from 10:00a.m. until Noon. The service is free. We can accommodate up to 12 little disciples!

Many, many thanks to all who made last Sunday's St. Joseph Parish Bazaar such a successful event! The entire parish owes a debt of gratitude to Joe and Helen Schwinn, this year's chairpersons; and their co-chairs, Kerry and Michele Brungardt. Once again, Bob Patzwald and his kitchen crew produced a delicious roast beef dinner for us! Special thanks, too, to Patty Tate and all her volunteers in the Kinzler Hall Dining Room, and Sharon Chmidling and her team who prepared our Barbeque Beef Sack Suppers on Saturday night.

God bless you always!

Fr. David McEvoy, O.Carm., Pastor
